“And while in my lifetime I’ve seen science make extraordinary inroads into solving the most complex questions of life, after all this time I admit that I am thrilled that there are some things that forever will remain a mystery. For example, do I wear a toupee?” — William Shatner, Up Till Now: An Autobiography

What was intended as a simple bit of self-effacing humor from actor William Shatner has instead become a challenge laid at the feet of the creators of Shatner’s Toupee — a blog devoted entirely to the question of Shatner’s hair (or lack thereof). They provide the web’s most detailed movie-by-movie analysis from Shatner’s filmography on his various rugs.

The amazing thing is how serious (and thoroughly researched) the blog is in its quest for an answer. It makes the whole thing funnier somehow (which I’m sure is intentional) to read someone poring over every frame of some long-forgotten Shatner television appearance for indisputable proof, offering a play-by-play opinion of every head scratch, every combed part, and every hairline that’s found its way onto the actor’s head. While Shatner himself has never owned up to any wig-wearing, Shatner’s Toupee makes a pretty convincing argument otherwise.

Roy’s Motel is not what it seems. In writer/director Chad Feehan’s debut film Wake, a young couple on the road, played by Josh Stewart and Jamie-Lynn Sigler, stop for the night at Roy’s on the road to California, hoping for a warm bed and hot coffee, and end up in a strange psycho-drama where all of their darkest secrets are laid bare. It’s a movie that defies easy categorization, a corkscrew morality play that rivals the very best episodes of The Twilight Zone, and we’ve got four exclusive pics from the new film.

Wake makes its debut at SXSW on Saturday, March 14th with Feehan and his stars on-hand for the premiere. If you like your movies a little more unpredictable than the average flick, you’ll definitely want to keep Wake on your radar. Check out the gallery for our exclusive stills.

This one isn’t for your Twi-hards out there. This is for all of you who rant about vampires who sparkle; who loathe every over-saturated bit of Twilight news and fandom. Who think vampires shouldn’t have loving families and designer clothes, who would never dare go to high school unless it was part of the hunt. Those of you who love bats with sharp teeth who can never go out in the day.

If you were gonna send an old-school vampire after Edward Cullen and beat him up, who would you choose? Would it be the old Vlad the Impaler Dracula himself? A Lost Boy or two? Maybe the fiendish loverboy Lestat? Or even the other teen vamp heart-throb Stefan?

Or, how about The Count? You know, not Dracula, but the vampire who finds 1, 2, 3 ways to bring a Cullen down! “poopbear” over at DeviantART recently created the ultimate showdown where Edward is brought “Down for the Count” by Sesame Street’s counting vampire. I can’t decide if it only takes 1 … 1 punch to knock him out, or if The Count preserves some of his strength to give 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 punches to knock the sparkles out. Check out the whole piece after the jump.

Zack Snyder has abandoned the comic book store and ventured into the children’s literature department for his next film, an animated adaptation of Kathryn Lasky’s series The Guardians of Ga’Hoole. This week, Warner Bros decided to blandly re-title it The Legend of the Guardians, but the news was followed by some gorgeous stills and the first trailer — which helps it become a lot more memorable.

USA Today has the first look at the film and caught up with Snyder, who decided to take a break from the hardcore and visit a world of owl mythology. “At some point, I figured, I had to do something my kids could watch. Now I’m the one into the stories and mythology.” Despite his reputation for sex and gore, he scaled back the intensity of the books because he actually felt they were too dark to animate. Reading about owl battles is one thing, but no kid wants to see owls ripping things apart with their talons, believe me.

While the photos are full of feathery beauty, the trailer from Yahoo! Movies is actually quite stunning. Snyder’s aesthetic is definitely all over it, but it’s really quite lush and rich in its animation. If I want to reach out and pet their fluffy bellies in 2-D, 3-D should have kids actually reaching out and trying. It has a very impressive voice cast (Helen Mirren, Hugo Weaving, Geoffrey Rush, Sam Neill, David Wenham) but they may all be drowned out by Jim Sturgess’ Soren who really comes off a bit too forced in his wide-eyed enthusiasm. Check out the trailer below. I know the books are really popular, and anticipation is high for the film with its fans. I’m anxious to hear if it meets their stringent expectations!

The gallery from USA Today is also below. I hate to admit it, but this will have my ticket purely for the Cute Overload of Owls. What about you? Is this a film that’s now on your radar, or is there a reason why no one makes any movies about owls?

Writing a ton about Star Wars over the years — as well as watching the films more times than I can count — you’d think I would’ve seen it all by now. Or, alternatively, you’d think that nothing would surprise me when it comes to our friends from a galaxy far, far away. Well, think again — because as I scrolled through Total Film’s gallery of 30 awesomely rare Star Wars photos, my mind was kinda blown, and though I’ve seen behind-the-scenes images from the film before, these sort of hit you in that intimate spot before whispering, “You know you weren’t supposed to see this, right?”

The gallery includes priceless images like Harrison Ford (as Han Solo) practicing his Greedo kill, C-3PO enjoying a smoke in full costume between takes, Kenny Baker (the guy who played R2D2) out of costume with a Darth Vader helmet on, Chewbacca all laid out on the floor in costume form and Luke practicing his final blow to Darth Vader as a bunch of crew members look on — not to mention shots of classic scenes from angles we’ve never seen, like an overhead view of the gang rushing toward the Millennium Falcon after rescuing Princess Leia in the original film, or a shot of Luke and C-3PO from behind as they enter the Mos Eisley Cantina and observe the strange crowd.

If you’re a Star Wars fan, you will not be disappointed by what you see here, and I guarantee even the biggest fans haven’t seen some of these images. Check out a few of our favorites below, and the rest over at Total Film.

Cinematical has just received the first set of exclusive stills from the film Barry Munday, which will enjoy its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival on Saturday March 13th at 2pm at the world famous Paramount theater. One of the films we’ve been looking forward to the most at this year’s fest, Barry Munday stars Patrick Wilson as a suburban wanna-be ladies man who loses one of his testicles after being attacked in a movie theater … and, to make matters worse, learns that he’s facing a paternity suit from a woman he doesn’t remember having sex with. Happens to you all the time, I’m sure. Nevertheless, Barry marches forward and welcomes what may very well be his last chance to be a father with open arms … until, well, you’ll have to see the film to see what happens next.

I’m personally looking forward to watching Patrick Wilson take on a role we’re not used to seeing him in. Usually Wilson is the pretty boy, or the somewhat overage ass-kicking superhero, but he’s never just some mopey dude who hangs out in his underwear playing video games with a missing testicle. Based on the novel by Frank Turner Hollon called Life is a Strange Place, newbie Chris D’Arienzo makes his directorial debut here (he also wrote the screenplay) with a film the synopsis describes as a “surprisingly heart-warming tale of a guy who finds it took losing his manhood to be a better man.” Starring alongside Wilson are folks like Judy Greer, Chloe Sevigny, Malcolm McDowell, Cybill Shepard & Billy Dee Williams.

Check out both exclusive photos in the gallery below. And if you’re attending SXSW this year, make sure to check out Barry Munday at the Paramount theater on March 13th at 2pm. We’ll have more on the film once the festival gets underway.

UPDATE: Sorry folks, the images were leaked and weren’t supposed to be online yet. As such, Summit Entertainment has asked us to remove them. We’ll re-post when given the all clear. The above image is currently the only approved image for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

Get ready to change your pants, Twihards! The Eclipse inundation has started with lots of hot and steamy lip action between Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson). It starts off with laughter in that meadow the two lovebirds always return to, but quickly devolves into a sexy flip-book of ever-increasing sauciness. Considering the lushness of the pillows behind them, the middle pictures (all in our gallery below) must be in Edward’s new bed, either when he tries to extol the virtues of said bed, or when Bella tries to seduce him to get some human sex. There are kisses, leg grabs, and bared chesticles.

And, because Stephenie Meyer’s little vampiric romance loves to mix the creepy in with the lust, these pics are attached with a shot of Riley (Xavier Samuel) and Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) ready to rip Edward’s head off. Yeah, I know. That’s not part of the book. It looks like the powers that be wanted Edward to be in more risque danger and here he is, with Riley ready to rip off an arm and Victoria ready to decapitate. It could just be a dream ruse, but considering the floundering Edward was in New Moon, I’m not holding my breath. They like to ignore his mindreading and make him a lame fighter on-screen.

So, Twi-hards, what do you think of the footage thus far? Do you have to take a minute to compose yourselves? Are you mourning the new, wigged Victoria? Weigh in below.

(And Jacob does represent in this little series of pics: His little carved wolf charm is visible in at least one picture.)

It’s either this year’s The Wrestler, or the film equivalent of that nasty drunk at the bar who’s just slowly making the biggest ass of himself with each passing minute. In the works for 10 years now, Mitch Glazer’s Passion Play has just wrapped production and star Mickey Rourke sat down for a brief chat with Entertainment Weekly in which, among other things, he calls Megan Fox “probably the best young actress I’ve ever worked with” and at the same time bashes one or both of his Wrestler co-stars by saying “there wasn’t much chemistry there.” Oh Mickey, what will you say next?

In Passion Play, Rourke plays a down-and-out trumpet player who looks to a young winged angel for redemption in 1950s Los Angeles. On Fox’s character, Rourke notes, “She has wings, so she was sort of an oddity trapped in a carnival act. She’s been a prisoner her whole life, and she has no understanding of trust. She’s very vulnerable and delicate.” It’s not hard to see similarities with Rourke’s character in The Wrestler, but he tries to distance himself from that film and its story (in an odd way) by criticizing the lack of chemistry on set and then noting: “As far as the redemption is concerned, it’s almost fate. It’s not so much that my character is seeking redemption, it’s almost like it falls in my lap by accident. And I try and hold on to it as much as I can.”

Check out the rest over at EW. Passion Play will most likely debut at some point in 2010.

Edward Norton playing a set of twins in a stoner dark comedy? Sign me up! Cinematical has just received these exclusive images from Leaves of Grass, written and directed by Tim Blake Nelson. In the film, Norton plays twin brothers Bill and Brady Kincaid — the former of which is an Ivy League philosophy professor who is lured back to his Oklahoma hometown by his pot-growing twin brother in order to assist in his stoner sibling’s ill-conceived scheme to take down a local drug lord (played by Richard Dreyfuss). Also starring in the film are Keri Russell as the new woman that comes into Bill’s life, and Susan Sarandon as the twin brothers’ eccentric mother.

Nelson, who also has a role in the film, last met up with Norton on the big screen in The Incredible Hulk, and he wrote the part in Leaves of Grass specifically for his friend, even though Norton didn’t know it until after the script was written (according to a chat from the Toronto Film Festival back in 2008). You can check out the brand new images by viewing the gallery below. Additionally, we’ve provided a statement from Tim Blake Nelson after the jump.

Leaves of Grass hits theaters on April 2nd.
