If you were able to get past early rumors about whether or not The White Stripes duo, Jack & Meg White, were siblings or exes and dig into their music, you’ll be happy to hear that the band’s documentary, Under Great Northern White Lights, is arriving to DVD on March 16. The film follows the band on its 2007 tour across Canada to promote their album, Icky Thump. The tour was marked by playing shows in “secret” and unusual locales, including a bowling alley and a youth center. Sadly, the band canceled the remainder of their tour in September 2007 after announcing Meg was suffering from acute anxiety problems — something she actually poked fun at during a tour the following year.
Emmett Malloy’s Under Great White Northern Lights premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2009 and will make another appearance at Austin’s SXSW festival which kicks off March 12. The film will also be shown in AMC theaters and other select venues this month. In the spirit of their DIY tour style, the band is encouraging fans to also host their own screening and is even offering “screening kits” which are available on the movie’s website.
Kits are available until March 10 and include: the Northern Lights DVD, popcorn and a peppermint swirl candy. Prizes will be awarded to the most creative screenings and the band is asking that you host your party on March 16. If you’re not that energetic, then find a public screening right over here. You can purchase the limited-edition box set of the film, which includes the DVD, a live DVD of the band’s 10th anniversary show — complete with live double CD, an exclusive 7 – inch, a hardcover book and a silk-screened print. Jackpot!
Check out the trailer for Northern Lights after the jump.

When I’m not glued to my computer writing about movies, I’m stuck to my studio chair — up to my ears in the ramshackle contraptions I create that often take over my entire table, floor and other areas of the apartment. Part of my art repertoire is creating miniature worlds out of anything I can find and inserting characters strung together from a bizarre assortment of materials. A demented dollhouse disguised as art? Perhaps. But I’m not content to toy with their floppy, awkward bodies as I once did in my younger years. In order to breathe life into these figures, I manipulate them for stop-motion video shoots.
Plastic toys inhabit the world of Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar in their 2009 stop-motion animation film, A Town Called Panic, which revolves around the adventures that a group of plastic toys (the essential Cowboy, Indian and Horse) encounter as they go about their daily lives. It’s a zany good time.
Panic’s distributor, Zeitgeist Films, is hosting a stop-motion animation contest in honor of the U.S. DVD release this year. The winning film will be included on the DVD and you’ll even get five copies to spread the love around. Nine runner-up filmmakers get other prizes and the rest of you will probably go home and sulk over a Brothers Quay movie. Invite me over if you do.
The deadline for the contest is March 1 and all that’s required to enter is a stop-motion film under three minutes long, using the theme of “panic” as your guide. It’s open to all ages and will not be judged on the sophistication of the animation so break out your children’s toys or do a little dumpster diving and get crackin’. All the contest details are right over here.

Wouldn’t you like to have your very own piece of memorabilia from a Coen Brothers’ film? Variety Children’s Charity of Southern California and Focus Features are offering fans of the Coens’ most recent film, A Serious Man, the opportunity to bid to win the 1966 Dogde Coronet driven by Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) in the Academy Award-nominated movie.
The auction begins on Monday, February 22, and ends on Thursday, March 4, and you can bid on the classic car here. Bidding will start at less than the $20,000 value of the car, which is not a bad deal for a driveable piece of minor movie history. It may not be as immediately iconic as the motorcycle from Raising Arizona or Josh Brolin’s pick-up truck in No Country for Old Men, but it’s still a sweet ride, and it’s for a great cause.
Founded in 1941, Variety raises funds to “support a full range of services encompassing medical, health, recreational, and social services; and provide a wide array of therapeutic, literacy, and mental health programs not traditionally funded by other private or public sources.”

We’ve taken a little break from our weekly Insert Caption contests for the time being, and instead will be doling out really super cool special edition Insert Caption contests every now and then when you least expect it (and when we happen upon a very cool prize). Like, for example, several copies of the Paranormal Activity DVD — due in stores tomorrow. But why wait on line and pay for a copy of one of this year’s hottest and most talked-about films when you can write a funny caption and win one for free?
Yup, for this special edition Insert Caption we have five (5!) copies of the Paranormal Activity DVD to hand out to the five folks who most impress us with their caption for the photo below. Additionally, Paramount is running another cool contest to go along with the DVD release where you can win tickets to an upcoming Paramount Pictures movie premiere. All you need to do is watch Paranormal Activity starting at 12:01 AM EST on Tuesday, 12/29/09 and tweet to @TweetYourScream with hashtag #UpAllNight for a chance to win two tickets to the upcoming movie premiere. For more on that contest, head here.
The rest of you looking to score a free Paranormal Activity DVD can scope out the image below and throw your best caption in the comments section. Good luck!

Welcome back to another edition of Insert Caption — the game that’s always wondered why vampires don’t carry any nasty diseases with all the blood they drink. Last week we asked you to churn out some pirated captions for a photo from the new film Pirate Radio (in theaters now). Congrats go out to our three winners for broadcasting their unique sense of humor across these fabulous internets.
1. “Everyone thought it would be a great idea if he changed his name to Phillip Claus Hoffman. They knew it was time to stop drinking…” — John R.
2. “The chances of two of them showing up with the same hairstyle was one thing, but all three? That called for another round.” — Charles P.
3. “It took a while to decorate, but it was all worth it when he got them drunk enough to believe it was Christmas.” — Ben M.

This week we’re celebrating an upcoming vampire spoof comedy called Transylmania (in theaters December 4th), which follows a group of college kids who decide to do a semester abroad in Romania (who wants to go to school in Romania?), and learn that if strange eclectic food won’t kill them, a hungry group of vampires will. The blood suckers behind our three favorite captions this week will limp away with one Transylmania hat, one Transylmania button and one Transylmania mini poster. Sound off below … and try not to, um, suck.

Our Fifth Annual Halloween Costume Contest saw a record number of submissions, with literally hundreds of freaky movie-inspired Halloween costumes for our crack team of judges to sift through. Naturally it took forever to choose 20 finalists (10 in the adult category and 10 in the child category), but after hours of tireless deliberations we finally narrowed down the list and came away with what I believe to be the cream of the crop. Before we ask you to vote for the winning costumes, I’d personally like to thank all of you out there for dressing up and playing along. Though it’s a giant task each year, it’s one I always welcome with open arms because nothing puts a bigger smile on my face then to sift through photos of you all getting your movie geek on.
Okay, here’s how this works: Below you will see a photo gallery for each category. Within each photo gallery there are ten images which represent each finalist alongside a number and the character they’re dressed up as. Below each gallery there is a poll listing the numbers and characters as per the order they show up in their gallery (note: this order is random). We need you to look through each gallery, then vote for who you feel has the best costume in the polls. Got it? Good.
The Adult Finalists are listed below, and the Kid Finalists are listed after the jump (along with the prizing and official rules). We’ll keep the voting open through Friday and announce the winner a week from today. Good luck!
2009 Costume Finalists: Adults
1. Beetlejuice
2. Han Solo Frozen in Carbonite
3. Iron Man
4. Marge from The Simpsons Movie
5. Mr and Mrs. Potatohead from Toy Story
6. Tyler Durden from Fight Club
7. Up House from Up
8. WALL-E

This week we’re turning up the dial and tuning in for the upcoming release of Pirate Radio, about a group of rogue DJs who, in the 1960s, changed the world of Rock n Roll forever by playing rock records (and simultaneously breaking the law) from the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Directed by Richard Curtis (Love, Actually), the film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost and Kenneth Branagh. The folks behind our three favorite captions this week will sail away with one Pirate Radio soundtrack and one Pirate Radio poster. Sound off below.

Welcome back to another installment of Insert Caption — the game that spent the past 36 hours staring at goats only to walk away with nothing but a migraine and a funky odor on its clothing. (Oh yes, games wear clothes — you didn’t know?) Last week we asked you to get in touch with your Cagey side and spit out a caption for a photo from Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, starring Nicolas Cage as the kind of guy you really don’t want to have to buy Christmas gifts for. Congrats to our three winners for their inspired (and hilarious) captions!
1. “I had the boys mock up the poster to our next movie. I call it “Dress/ Off”. — Remy W.
2. “I know that it sounds romantic and all, but I’m not going to fight that bear for you.” – Daniel M.
3. “Just don’t let that leopard eat me, honey!!!” — Joe P.
